Flying dragon ships
A brief alternative history where heathenism prevailed over Christianity in England...
It's medieval times… Danelaw never went away in England. Christianity didn't take hold in the Danelaw regions, which stretched from East Anglia and parts of the Midlands, up to Yorkshire in the north, and beyond. The Saxons in southern England remained Christian. But there was a truce of sorts ever since Danelaw England helped the southern Saxons fight off the Norman Invasion.
The Danes from Suffolk northwards moved forwards with their technology. Some say it was because Christianity held people back. But the Saxons in southern England began defying the Pope as they needed to keep up with the regions under Danelaw.
Some southern Saxons returned to their old Odinist ways, saying that their ancestors were forced to give up their old beliefs by the Christians, often at sword point. Temples to Thunor and Freya slowly got rebuilt.
Meanwhile those in the Danelaw regions continued to follow their old ways. Inventors created a machine that could print runic text on scrolls. Runes were made more flowing to match the new mediums.
With their new flying ships the Danelaw peoples reached far further across the world than ever before. Some said they glimpsed the Midgard Serpent and saw routes into the realm of Hel, and that the gods of Asgard allowed some to climb the Rainbow Bridge, with Heimdall waving them on. Many said these were mere tales, but there’s many a truth in tales, especially those told by the new flying warriors.
