"One more life" for Italian singer Beppe De Francesco
With his latest song taking the world by storm, Beppe relates how his encounter online with Doktor Snake "thunderstruck" him...
Beppe De Francesco is a musician and actor from Italy. Somebody whom Doktor Snake has inspired to pursue his artistic mission and be all he can be. As Beppe puts it, “My encounter online with Doktor Snake has thunderstruck me.”
But more on that shortly. First, let’s look at Beppe’s new song, “Almeno Un'Altra Vita” (video above), which despite being sung in Italian, is taking off globally, getting top reviews and gaining ground on streaming services.
Beppe is surprised that this song is proving so popular in English-speaking countries, particularly in the UK and US, Canada, and Australia.
"I'm bewildered by the enthusiastic response I'm getting given the language barrier,” Beppe told me. “Why it’s touching ears and hearts is a mystery to me. I'd always imagined people had to understand the lyrics, what they say. Yet people seem to get it anyway even though they don't know Italian. It really is like the music bypasses people's minds and gets directly to their hearts."
To date, Beppe has released three singles on independent labels. This latest song, “Almeno Un'Altra Vita”, translates in English as “At Least One More Life”, and is very much influenced by the music of the 1980s.
“I am very inspired by the legendary Depeche Mode and it would be a very coveted goal for me to be able to recreate those sounds and languid atmospheres,” he says. I also listen to a lot of Simple Minds, Duran Duran, Soft Cell, the Clash, and even Kiss - I loved the way they disguised themselves!”
Beppe feels that the summer pop and soft rock feel of his music is partly what is driving his current success. That and the visionary element.
"I live music as a boundary between reality and dream,” he relates,”a moment in which I can allow myself to express much better by reliving the intensity of moments experienced through a song and to convey this feeling to those who want to listen to me. I think this is the way to do poetry today".
Beppe’s background, however, is in dramatic arts. Graduating in acting and directing from the Trieste Institute of Dramatic Art, he has performed in many theater productions in Italy as well as appearing in numerous national television dramas.
Yet due to a traumatic event many years ago, Beppe may never have written poetry, lyrics, or plays again.
“Unfortunately, a house fire irretrievably destroyed all my poems and plays written from the age of 14 until the age of 20 and this caused me great existential trauma,” he says. “I took it as a sign that I should not get too deep into these mental and emotional speculations.”
Beppe felt that part of his soul had been ripped out of him.
“I stopped writing for too many years, then resumed at the age of 50, writing songs.”
In a sense, Beppe got “one more life” - to paraphrase the title of his song Almeno Un'Altra Vita.
This was where Doktor Snake came into the picture. As Beppe relates:
“My encounter online with Doktor Snake has thunderstruck me, totally flooded me with energies that I had previously thought unattainable. He provided me with a clarity of purpose that I had not thought possible. His words are like manna from heaven to me... With him I found the mental clarity I was looking for so long.”
