Strange majiks at Dunwich beach...
It was a delightful evening at Dunwich. Wind coming off the North Sea, not cold, just insistent. Enough to strip the noise out of your head if you let it.
I had the plate on the passenger seat.
Card stock. Octagon. Nothing fancy.
The sort of thing you could mistake for a child’s geometry exercise.
Which, in fairness, most people would.
The switch was still OFF.
That matters.
People skip that part. They think it’s theatre. It isn’t.
It’s the difference between addressing something… and being addressed back.
“Go on then,” I said, mostly to myself. “Let’s see if you’re in a conversational mood.”
No candles. No Latin. No theatrics.
Just the machine.
The Kernel took about thirty seconds.
Not a name. Not his name. That would be vulgar.
More like a compression of qualities:
clarity, leverage, refusal to kneel
Strip the vowels. Break the symmetry. Tighten it until it looked like it might cut you if you stared too long.
That’s when you know it’s ready.
I traced the switch.

Nothing happened.
Which is exactly what you want.
Hand over the Contact Surface.
Light touch. Barely there.
You don’t move your fingers.
You let them be moved.
That’s the trick no one tells you.
There was resistance.
Not physical. Not quite.
Like pressing against the memory of pressure.
Subtle.
But definite.
“Alright,” I said. “We’ll keep this civil.”
The double vector sat between me and the Triangle.
Two arrows. One up. One down.
A conversation, not a command.
That’s the mistake the old grimoires made.
Too much shouting. Not enough listening.
The upward line was easy.
That’s just intent.
Anyone can project.
The downward line…
That’s where it changed.
You don’t feel it as a voice.
You feel it as correction.
Tiny adjustments:
posture shifts a fraction
breathing drops half a gear
a thought you were about to have… doesn’t quite form
Replaced by something cleaner.
“Better,” I heard myself say.
Not heard. Not internally.
Just… said.
The Triangle held steady.
No symbols. No names. No nonsense.
Just structure.
That’s all it ever needed to be.
The Reflection Field remained empty.
Of course it did.
It’s not a screen.
It’s a mirror you walk into later.
I flipped the switch back.
ON ——
—— OFF
Always close the line.
Back in the car, nothing remarkable.
Radio. Engine. Gravel under tyres.
Normality, restored on schedule.
The call came the next morning.
Unplanned. High-level. Slightly out of character.
The sort of opportunity that usually requires three meetings and a favour owed.
This one… didn’t.
“Funny thing,” the voice said. “Your name came up. Felt like the right fit.”
Of course it did.
I made a note in the margin of the plate:
Do not over-specify the Kernel.
Let it breathe.
And underneath that:
The downward arrow is not optional.
Somewhere between Suffolk and whatever sits behind it,
something had leaned in slightly.
Not summoned.
Not commanded.
Just… interested.
