This week UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced the government will be looking into mandatory Digital ID for all citizens.
NOTE: “Mandatory” doesn't mean a law, so don't be deceived by that one.
The “selling point” (if you can call it that) is to prevent illegal working, which in turn would impact the migrant problem, which is harming the Labour Government in terms of popularity.
The longer game is tight, totalitarian control of British Citizens. From there the plan is to implement Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) - a further, even more draconian mode of control and subjugation of the populace.
If you are a British citizen and don't want all this, head to the following petition and get your voice heard. It's already got over two million signatures which easily forces a debate in parliament.

The other downside of Digital ID is you would be forced to trust the government to keep you ID data safe. The likelihood is there'd be a big spike in ID theft. And you can bet the government wouldn't care. It would launch an inquiry and little would be done, despite their arrant incompetence at even keeping their WhatsApp messages secure.
Back in 2010 the idea of Digital ID was raised. It was dismissed as not only being far to expensive to implement, but also was unnecessary.
The reason the Starmer government are trying to rush this one through is they are desperate. Popularity non-existent. No doubt the higher echelons, above government, giving them grief - again, the wealthy and powerful are desperate seeing their control being undermined worldwide.
Never forget, Digital ID is another downward spiral into totalitarianism and fascism. A technocratic control state.
Oh, and as a side note, for students and pensioners Digital ID would be optional. Presumably because they are not seeking work.
That would mean company directors and the self-employed wouldn't be obliged to sign up for Digital ID. (This is the category I'd be in).
But anybody needing to rent a home would be required to have Digital ID.
