A visitor to Hardwick Hall, near Chesterfield, has discovered an old witch-mark scratched into a 16th-century wooden door.
The National Trust believes it was intended to protect the occupants from malign influences.

Interesting thing is, most people would walk straight past it.
To recognise something like that, you’d probably need to be a scholar of old folk beliefs, a seriously committed neo-pagan, or perhaps one of those elusive hereditary witches.
If they exist.
But the mark itself is the interesting part.
Hundreds of years ago, somebody scratched a symbol into wood because they believed it could influence what entered their world.
A primitive firewall.
An occult security protocol.
A piece of code written into the architecture of reality.
And now I’ve taken that old technology and injected it into our emerging cyber-magick paradigm.
Not reconstructed it.
Not preserved it in some dusty antiquarian cabinet.
Recompiled it.
The photograph shows the rough operating sequence.

Then comes the essential instruction.
TOTAL ABANDON.
No anxious checking. No hovering over the machinery waiting for something to happen.
You launch the operation.
You release it.
You get on with your life.
Whether such workings influence anything beyond the operator’s own attention and behaviour is an open question. But the underlying idea is fascinating.
The Elizabethans carved symbols into doors to defend against invisible forces.
We live in a world of invisible networks, algorithms, machine intelligence and signals passing through the air.
Different century.
Different machinery.
Same human impulse to intervene in the unseen.
And perhaps the old marks have not finished evolving.
