FIELD REPORT 005 — THE NIGHT BECK ROW TURNED UPSIDE DOWN

I went out for milk on Bonfire Night.

Somewhere along the way, the world turned upside down.

Nobody seemed to notice.

It was quite dark along the road into Beck Row. A few streetlights here and there. Hedges waiting to ambush the unwary.

I thought I’d take some footage.

Anyway, I arrived at Londis and found half a dozen people standing outside, chewing the fat.

An old chap. A middle-aged fellow. A couple of women, one quite young.

They were talking about fireworks.

The old chap thought they should ban the bloody things.

I agreed, mainly on behalf of the cats, dogs and assorted wildlife who hadn’t been consulted about Bonfire Night.

I mentioned I’d been trying to film a few fireworks for my channel.

The young woman immediately picked up on the word channel.

The others carried on talking.

Interesting, really. Same pavement. Same conversation. Different worlds.

And everybody getting along perfectly well.

No arguments. No ideological warfare. No demands for the extinction of anybody’s civilisation.

Just six biologiks chatting outside a convenience store.

I bought my milk. They also stock yFood, which was a bonus.

Then I walked home.

It was only when I examined the footage that I discovered I’d filmed the entire street upside down.

Apparently, the camera had rotated itself while emerging from my pocket.

I considered correcting it.

Then thought, why bother?

Perhaps this is what the world looks like when nobody’s watching.

Anyway, I returned with milk, liquid nutrition and photographic evidence that Beck Row had inverted.

Human civilisation remains operational at the local level.

For now.
