Following this message up using mainstream sources, you find from the links provided further down that an early version of what became Facebook was indeed being developed by DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) as far back as 2001, mostly likely before that too. The protocols for Bitcoin and blockchains were being worked on by the NSA (Nation Security Agency). You can see the same with personal assistants like Siri and Alexa.
The question one might ask is: was a digital prison envisioned at the very beginning of the internet? Especially bearing in mind the early internet - ARPANET - was developed as a means for the military to have multiple ways of contacting each other in the event of a nuclear war.
It may not have taken long for the deep state and intelligence services to see the potential of this networking technology to spy on and control civilians on a global scale. Plus, of course, such a lot of the internet was free - something unheard of in previous times… why didn’t we look a gift horse in the mouth!
